Russian Scam

How does it work: the scammers establish some lovely correspondence with you, fall in love with you after just a couple of letters and then start asking for money, for all kinds of reasons - for visa and ticket to come meet you, for English classes, for cell phone, for Internet connection, for sick Mom, whatever. Once you send her money, she is gone. Or, she will ask you for more money and then will be gone.

There is a lot written on Internet about it but it is sad how little of it is right to the point. There are even full dating agencies and antiscam website operated by the organized scammers!!! The truth is actually that although the worldwide online dating scene is heavily infested with scam it is not the Russian girls themselves who do it! There are tons of legal proof that: Russian girls are NOT scammers! Most of the Russian scam (about 90% of it, if not more) originates form the same source: REPUBLIC OF MARI EL in Russia. Of course there are some freelance scammers out there, but their number is very insignificant compared to the number of scam profiles generated daily by Mari El. Yes, there is a criminal organization in Mari El behind the Russian scam.

The profiles show different locations and cities in Russia, Ukraine and other ex-Soviet Union countries. But every time a bad profile is placed on our site, or we ask the victims to forward us the full e-mail headers of the scammer's e-mail, they ALWAYS show the same IPs and the same Internet Service providers. Sometimes the scammers change ISP and then all scam, like with a magic wand, starts originating from that new ISP. If we ban that IP range from our site, all registrations start coming through anonymous proxies.

This criminal organization is leaded by men, they hire people from Yoshkar Ola to do the dirty job for them: place profiles and conduct the correspondence. Most likely, they work on commissions, like telemarketers. The activity of this criminal organization is enormous, they place hundreds of profiles out there every day. The photos of girls on the phony Russian profiles come from different sources. Sometimes they use the photos of Russian models and celebrities. But they also pay women a minimal fee to sit and pose for pictures and to pick up the money at the Western Union. The girls on the pictures sometimes know what's going on and how their pictures are being used, sometimes don't. The gang may also have accomplices in certain Western Union locations.

Their profiles may say whatever: that they are from Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Samara, Volgograd, Chelyabinsk, Kiev, Odessa, sometimes even USA. But as you know, the money wired via Western Union can be picked up at any city and at any Western Union location, so it doesn't mean anything. The scammers are in Mari El.

These facts are based on my personal observations as a dating webmaster of a dozen of dating websites and and on the experience of other sincere webmasters in the same area, we are ready to present legal proofs of the statements made here if needed.

Ok, now, what to do then? It won't be easy to actually presecute that organization especially in a Mafia country like Russia, so please help yourself by following these simple steps:

1. Never, Never, Never send money to Russian women for any reason whatsoever!
2. Talk with your lady on the phone, get sure the phone is a land line and not anywhere near Mari El.
3. Even if a lady doesn't ask money, still there are other possible unpleasant scenarios that may happen when it comes to the point when you are ready to visit her in Russia or Bulgaria or any other East European country, many of them. It won't be a bad idea to consult us and just ask our opinion if all seems fine. This is totally free of cost even if the lady is not from our agency and actually even if you are not registered with us. Just send us your complete correspondence copies with her and any other useful info.

African Scam (Nigerian Scam)

Nigerian dating scam (or romance scam), besides just asking for money for their sick relatives, etc.. usually involves this scheme: the scammers upload fake attractive photos, in most cases of white people. They pretend to be the foreign specialists working in Nigeria (usually from US, but it may also be Canada, UK or any other European country). After they establish some lovely correspondence with you, fall in love and maybe even send a couple of cheap presents, they will tell you that their employer pays them with Money Orders, and they can't cash them in Nigeria or anything like that. They will send you the Money Orders and ask you to deposit them into your bank account and then wire the money to them via Western Union. Usually they say to keep some money for your trouble. Needless to say, those Money Orders are no good, and not even worth the paper they're printed on.

If you cash them or deposit them into your account, Money Orders will come back after few weeks as fraudulent and you will be responsible for paying back the money to the bank and sometimes even charged for passing counterfeit instrument.

The scammers have many faces: not only they frequently change names, emails and photos, but they may list themselves on different dating sites as being of different gender, race, age, location and sexual orientation so the only true and reliable cure against this type of scam is the following: do not waste time writing to anybody on dating site that has anything to do with the following locations: Nigeria, Senegal and Cote D'vore or anywhere near there, basically all Africa except South Africa .It is a good idea to check the ip from which they send you emails too.
